How to use
- Enter the distance in miles.
- Enter each hiker's pace in minutes per mile. A larger number is slower.
- Press Calculate. The hero is minutes at the slower pace.
- If you have three hikers, type the two slowest, or type the slowest twice. The faster paces do not change the result.
How it's calculated
Slower pace = the maximum of the two minutes-per-mile figures. Minutes = distance × that pace.
The page does not average the paces. Averaging would plan a meeting time the slower person misses.
Worked example
Eight miles at 18 minutes per mile and 24 minutes per mile uses 24. The walk is 192 minutes, which is 3 hours 12 minutes. At the faster pace alone it would be 144 minutes. The hour between them is why the page refuses to average.
Assumptions
Both people walk the whole distance at the pace you typed, and the group waits. A split where the faster hiker goes ahead is a different plan. Use each pace on the pace calculator if you want both arrival times.
FAQ
Why not average the two paces?
Because the average is a time the slower hiker does not hit. Staying together means the slower pace.
What if the paces are equal?
The result is that pace times the distance. Either number would do.
Can I enter minutes per kilometer?
Only if the distance is also in kilometers and you read the result as that unit. The labels say miles.
Does this include breaks?
No. Add them with the rest-stop page after you have the moving minutes.
