How to use
- Count steps, or read them from a counter you trust.
- Measure one stride in inches: the distance from one heel strike to the next heel strike of the same foot, or the step length you actually want to multiply. Use the same definition every time.
- Press Calculate. The hero is miles.
- If the miles look short, the stride you typed is probably a single step rather than a full stride. Either definition works if you stay consistent.
How it's calculated
Feet = steps × inches ÷ 12. Miles = feet ÷ 5,280. Kilometers = feet × 0.3048 ÷ 1,000.
The international foot, 0.3048 meters, is the only conversion. No map, no GPS track, and no height formula is applied.
Worked example
Ten thousand steps at 28 inches: 10,000 × 28 ÷ 12 = 23,333.33 feet, which is 4.42 miles and 7.11 kilometers. At 30 inches the same count is 4.73 miles.
Assumptions
Every step is the length you typed. Hills, fatigue, and a loaded pack change a real stride. Measure on the kind of ground you are estimating.
FAQ
Does this use my height?
No. Height is a rough guess other charts use. This page wants the length you measured.
Is a stride the same as a step?
People use both words. A step is often one footfall. A stride is often two. Type the length that matches the count you have.
Why not the pace calculator?
Pace needs a distance and a time. This page builds a distance from steps. You can take the miles to the pace page afterward.
Are GPS step counts exact?
They are the count you type. This page does not correct a watch.
